Mahisashura, who had a deep crave for power asked for immortality. Lord Bramha granted the wish, warning him that he would be killed by a woman. Consumed by power Mahisashura waged war upon the three realms The realm of gods, the earth and Hell. Army of Gods and demons could not defeat him due to the boon he got from Lord Bramha. Gods could not do anything about the brutal nature of the war so they decided to ask the aid of lord Vishnu. After considering the situation, lord Vishnu decided to create a female form to defeat Mahisashura.
As the legends state, Durga was the incarnation of Goddess Parvati The lord of the mountains. Durga depicts The Power that runs the universe.
Goddess durga then battled with the demon king for a long fifteen days. As Mahisashura could shift shapes, he transformed into different animals to mislead Durga. And finally The demon king Mahisashura transformed into a Buffalo that blew his covers and Goddess Durga Stabbed him with her trident, Thus ending the war over Evil.
Dashain marks this very day, when Durga stabbed Mahisashura and ended the war. Dashain falls on October and lasts for 9 days. There are many mythological stories behind the Dashain festival, the most prominent and famous of which is the victory of goodness over the evil of Maa Durga, and it also explains the reason for celebrating this festival by all Nepalis in Nepal.
According to this story, there was once a demon named Mahishasura. And this demon meditated hard to take a boon from Lord Brahma. Pleased with the austerity of Mahishasura, Lord Brahma appeared and asked him, what boon you want from me? Then he took the boon from Bhagwan Brahma that no man could kill him. After receiving this boon, the demon Mahisasura attacked with his army in the three worlds of the universe and disturbed all the deities.
Troubled by all this, all the gods went to the lord of the three worlds Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and prayed that Please end this demon. Then Lord Brahma asked to create a woman, and a goddess was created by combining the powers of all the gods and goddesses.
Those who were called Maa Durga, who had the power of all God. And finally, on the tenth day, Mahishasura was killed by Goddess Durga, and good triumphs over evil. Therefore, nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped on this festival, celebrated for 15 days. And another mythological story is also to celebrate this festival that on this day Lord Rama killed Ravana.
Therefore, this day is celebrated as a victory of good over evil in Hindu culture throughout India. Therefore, this festival is celebrated with great happiness and enthusiasm by Hindus all over India. From several days ago, the festivities of this festival started in all the houses with great enthusiasm. In our Dhading home, the kids will be flying kites, playing on the traditional swing and finishing the day off with a barbeque and a trip to the cinema!
The children from our Birgunj home will be starting the day with Puja prayers , followed by kite flying and a trip to the Parwanipur market, where there will be a huge fair! Thousands of goats, sheep, buffaloes, ducks and hens are sacrificed in Goddess Temple almost from every home. In Newar Community, Kuchi Bhoe is prepared in which ritually people should eat two pathi of beaten rice including various types of dishes in a banana leaf.
On this day, the Taleju Temple gates of Basantapur are accessible to the general public. Thousands of devotees go and pay respect to the goddess all along the day. This day is also known as Viswakarma day. These festivities continue for four days till the rising of the full moon. During that period, family and relatives, who are live apart, meet each other and take blessings from the elders. The following 5 days celebrates the victories and more fiesta-style parties are held during this period!
