There are all sorts of problems: certain states are recognised by some countries and not by others; some are protectorates of former empires; members of the commonwealth; unclear autonomous regions and some are claimed by other states. Deciding what actually constitutes a country can be a political quagmire. Is Taiwan an independent country? Not according to the UN or China.
The Palestinian Territories? Depends who you ask. Recently, on a trip to the Caribbean we had the opportunity to take a day trip to Montserrat. I downloaded a fairly comprehensive list of states in the world.

I think that kind of sucks a lot of the joy out of life. I have to admit that I think this conversation is just really overblown. As you said, who cares how others define us, so why should we care either? Seeking out new experiences, regardless of where in the world those experiences take place, is better than not doing it at all.
Why define those who do so? So many people travel in so many different ways. But I think you hit the nail on the head by saying that travel is really all about passion — so true!
And if I may it is also what defines other things such as a cook for instance. Quality, love and passion same goes for travelers. And I like that definition of Hobo too! Travel is what I do when my wife gets tired—understandably—of listening to me and tells me to get the hell out of the house and go somewhere…anywhere. But then the definition of travel is dependent on your definition of home. Wannabe — Indeed, the journey is at least half the fun! What are tourists doing, if not traveling?
Having said that, the definition of home is a great way to define different types of travelers. As a hobo, I guess I fit into the nomad category…. All catagorizing travel styles does is expose any bias in the one who catagorizes.

I have always maintained that growing up in the nomadic lifestyle of the Air Force set the pattern but neither of my brothers have been filled with the same burning desire to not just visit but experience as much of the world as possible.
