By Julia Blum April 25, By Jonathan Lipnick July 25, Christians and Catholics are not the same. They have two entirely different doctrines and Catholics believe in the Apocrypha among many other man made traditions and Christians do not.
We do not regard them as words from God, but were added later by the Catholic Church. Such an interesting article. Gothic architecture or style lat: Gothicus: belonging to Goths was originally concealed by the name Giorgio Vasari who wanted to say that, from the point of view of the Italian Renaissance, that style was barbaric. During the Middle Ages , most Europeans were illiterate peasants. Their daily lives revolved around the Church, from when they arose in the morning until sunset. This message was constantly reinforced by the sculptures, stained glass windows, relics, and other adornments found in Gothic cathedrals.
Depictions of the saints and Apostles, Old and New Testament stories, and Church doctrine like the final judgment comprised the images on the stained glass windows as well as outdoor and indoor sculptures and carvings. Still today European cathedrals serve as market areas, their squares frequently filled with vendors. This is most evident in November and December when Christmas markets appear in many cities and towns under the shadows of cathedral spires.
The cathedral was tied to town and city revenue in many ways during the Middle Ages. All great cathedrals displayed holy relics. Because pilgrimage was a key element of Medieval religious practices, churches that held important relics became key destinations, bringing in thousands of pilgrims that spent money in the town.
In , merchants from the Italian city of Bari forcibly stole the remains of St. Nicholas of Myra in Asia Minor. This action increased the popularity and prosperity of Bari.
Cathedral chapters, charged with the cathedral revenues, often held financial stakes in local merchant enterprises. A positive result of the Cult during the Middle Ages is that it led to an improved perception of women across society. Early in the period, ordinary women were viewed as little better than the property of men. In the later Middle Ages, church approval of the adoration of Mary, and a view of her as the intercessor for sins, led to more respect for women, particularly those from the upper reaches of society.
Throughout the Middle Ages, tradespeople made money from religious relics which were claimed to be those of the Virgin Mary. Any religious house which housed a relic belonging to Mary could be assured of a steady stream of pilgrims and their donations. Tuesday, October 19, Sign in. Whilst relatively few women appear in the bible, many of them are called Mary.
When we consider the Medieval Cult of the Virgin Mary therefore, it might be wise to remember the other Marys, in particular Mary Magdalene and consider how they are wrapped up within the adoration of the cult.
The Gospels were written down decades after the death of Jesus in about 30 AD. As in all things written so long after the event, what we are reading is the memory of that event not the history of that precise moment. The story of Jesus was undoubtedly changed according to what distinctive theological point needed to be made and somewhere along this line, the image of women and here we mean Mary, became altered and misinterpreted.
Mary became a figure onto which all manner of virtues and powers were hung. The Gospels that were chosen to form the New Testament were selected to be wholly male in content. Whether through a conscious or unconscious act, the Gospel of Mary was lost in the early period. This Gospel remained hidden for nearly years, only emerging in Cairo in The image of the woman Mary, the Virgin or Magdalene has, therefore, been manufactured by the emerging church.
The representation of Medieval women in history could be said to be coloured by the iconography of the Virgin Mary and of Mary Magdalen. This in turn could have its gestation in the way the disciplined and reforming Pope Gregory I created a mythological image around Mary Magdalene.
