In the mean time the two lines are getting pretty filled up and I notice that they are creating a 3rd line on the wall across from us near the check in. This line was not their when we arrived. Some of the people on the line were clearly friends or known to the pages as they are hugging them and chatting, etc. People who have been standing around us, already checked in. This goes on for a while and she counts, recounts and leaves 4 spots open.
The woman walks once again to our line and pulls out a couple and two young girls and fills up those remaining 4 spots and recounts her line once again for accuracy. Needless to say they had 1, yes 1 metal detector and 1 person checking bags so you already know this is going to be a long haul.
We Googled reviews of the show the next day and have found several people that have had exactly the same experience so it is obvious that this is the norm, not the exception to what goes on as part of the SNL floor audience selection.
I think it bares mentioning that while we were the second group to be ushered through and we noted that in general our group were probably all over 40 or had a group member that was over 40 made up the majority of the people in front and directly in behind of us , while we waiting to make our way to the metal detector the group that was bring up the rear were made up primarily of minorities, people wearing casual clothing and as much as it pains me and for a lack of a better description what I can only assume were considered the least attractive of the group.
My husband and I were disheartened by this to say the least. We were told over and over again to shut our cell phones off entirely and the penalty and embarrassment we would face should we be caught using the phone beyond this point etc. On top of being what we considered to be cheated out of closer seats we end up on padded seating on the back wall which has no back support and are VERY uncomfortable because as the elevators arrive on the 9th floor everyone just filters in and even though we were a head of people we are now behind them.
Arriving early, waiting in line and waiting your turn in this case does not guarantee you a good seat. I want to mention that the tickets given to us were NOT enough to gain us entry, they demanded to see the little white envelope they came in so please do not throw that envelope away or misplace it.
Also, while the tickets clearly say Dress rehearsal, the name of the host as well as the date on it, they will not let you keep the tickets and were even snippy when I asked about it. On to the show…. Despite Rockefeller center being as large and vast as it is the SNL sound stage is small but you will be astonished at what they do in that small space. It is amazing to see all the work that goes into the sets and getting them up and down so quickly.
They play music and keep you well entertained once you are seated. We saw additional skits and longer segments, some of which are cut or perfected for the live show. Some of the funnier, more edgier skits were cut out. You could see how taxing it is and how much steam they lost between the Dress and Live shows. I understand that they want a "back up" just in case but they should film them a day apart IMO.
To the shows cast and crew I have to tip my hat to you and give you 5 out of 5 stars. To the SNL Lobby crew who were allowed to pick and choose are seating fate based on age, attractiveness and whatever other criteria you choose your floor seating audience I give you 0 stars. Shame on SNL for condoning and allowing this type of discrimination to be alive and well in a day and age where equality should be a fundamental right to us all not just the young and attractive.

We reached the 49th Street entrance at Rockefeller at 6. Those right at the front of the queue had their sleeping bags and looked like they had spent the night there.
They start distributing the tickets shortly after 7am, and you have an option for the dress rehearsal or the actual live show. This queue sequence will be honoured at the queue for the show later in the night. We reached the NBC studios at The standby queue was eventually re-organised based on our queue sequence in the morning, so you can actually come later at about The wait was uncomfortable and long with hardly any updates from the staff!
The air-conditioning was turned off so it was stuffy and uncomfortable. Eventually at about You would figure by then they could easily count how many standbys they would need and let the rest of us know earlier to go off, but there were hardly any news from the NBC guys.

The standby line was on another street and we entered the studio through a new entrance. I love the new way they handle things.

Anyways, here are a few tips and info if you're thinking about waiting in line for standby tickets. Plan ahead! Check the weather and come prepared to sleep on the sidewalk. Bring a comfortable chair and warm blanket or whatever works for you. I've seen people bring tents. Anything goes in line. Arrive early! The first time I went I arrived around pm Friday. They hand out tickets at 7am Saturday. The second time I went, I arrived at 5pm Friday and there were already 40 people in front of me. There are plenty of hour bathrooms located inside deli's nearby so don't worry about where to get food or having to go to the bathroom.
Plus, the NBC bathroom closes around 11pm and opens up early so there are options. Be prepared to answer "What are you waiting in line for? A few of my favorite answers were "to get limited edition crocs" and "the new galaxy phone. Dress rehearsal or live show tickets?!?!
When the ticket people finally come outside you have to know which ticket option you want. I always go for the dress rehearsal because it's earlier, longer and you see ALL of the skits. The live show cuts out the unpopular ones. They run the same show during rehearsals. They take down your name have ID ready and give you a number. When you come back you will all be lined up in the NBC store.
I hope you're not claustrophobic. Then they let people go through security bring the bare minimum and then you head upstairs and wait for a few minutes. This is when you're in the same room with the priority ticket holders. You get a bracelet. They bring you down a hallway and then you're finally seated inside the studio.
